First let us address the static electricity, a primary reason some use dryer sheets. Reducing the amount of polyester clothing you own will certainly reduce the amount of static electricity you will experience. If, however, you still have too much static electricity, an alternative is to add a ball of aluminum foil to your dryer. This becomes one of the simple and cost effective eco cleaning products for your laundry room!

There are many great applications for dryer sheets that do not require direct exposure to your skin and allow you to use eco cleaning products for green natural home cleaning including:

• Soap Scum: Use them as a wash rag in your shower to easily remove the soap scum and hard water deposits from your shower. (My favorite.)
• Pot Scrubbers: The softening chemicals in the sheets will release the baked on food on pots and pans when soaked in hot water overnight. (Rinse thoroughly.)
• Repel Bugs and Rodents: The smell will chase away mice, skunks, squirrels, and other rodents. You can also keep bed bugs away by putting an unused dryer sheet where your bed touches the ground.
• Anti-Static: Use AFTER drying to reduce static electricity from your clothes. It is even better for your TV and computer screens.
• Freshen Shoes: Insert at night to freshen. You may also want to use to refresh other storage areas.
• Dust Free Blinds: Dust with the dryer sheets and the residual chemicals will act to repel dust.
• Iron: Iron (low setting) a used dryer sheet will remove some of the gunk.
• Paint Brushes: Soak your paint brushes in hot water and a dryer sheet to remove latex paint.

The main thing to remember about all these uses is that it is the chemicals in dryer sheets that make this magic happen. Keeping dryer sheets away from your skin and performing helpful home tasks is key to living a green clean life!

We think that eco cleaning products are great but dryer sheets are downright U-G-L-Y! Dryer sheets are one of the common items found in laundry rooms, but they definitely are NOT one of the most eco friendly cleaning products!

Dryer sheets are typically used to reduce the amount of static electricity in our clothes, make our clothes smell good, and are marketed to soften the clothes as well. Doing the research for this post, I find that there seems to be two dryer sheet camps: avid users of dryer sheets using them for every single load, while others “never” use them.

For the group that uses dryer sheets, Buyer Beware! Besides the fact that they cannot be classified as one of your eco cleaning products, they do not contribute to your sustainable practices. The “sheet” is polyester, not biodegradable so they only add volume to the landfills.

Additionally, the chemicals in the dryer sheets are extremely toxic. Ideally, eco cleaning products are not harmful to the health of babies, kids, pets and others. Unfortunately, the chemicals impregnated into the dryer sheet have been found to cause liver toxicity, nervous system damage and cancer in mammals. In fact, many are registered as EPA toxins. Furthermore, many chemicals in dryer sheets are listed as known carcinogens.

Anyone who has used dryer sheets, or even laundry detergent with a fragrance, has actually coated their clothing with a thin layer of toxic chemicals. Many do not think about it or
assume that chemicals put on our skin do not penetrate the skin. Sadly this is a myth. Nearly every chemical that touches the skin finds its way into the body and even worse, into the bloodstream. The toxic chemical residue left on clothing then is being rubbed their skin all day long. Just think about it, these toxic chemicals would not be approved as safe food ingredients due to their toxicity so why would you want them to be rubbing on your skin, the largest organ of your body?

Chemical absorption only increases with heat and moisture. If you are considering using eco cleaning cleaning products, you may be surprised to know that, contrary to popular opinion, fragrances and air fresheners are bad for you! There is good reason that those concerned about eco cleaning products seek “fragrance free” products – because the fragrance is bad for you.

Most fragrances and air fresheners are synthetic, petrochemical based substances that are made of extremely toxic chemicals, thus cannot be considered one of the desired eco cleaning products. Several chemicals common in fragrance are volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like benzaldehyde and toluene, both of which are skin and lung irritants and may also have more serious systemic health effects, particularly on the nervous system.

In popular air fresheners that we place inside our home, the four basic ingredients are formaldehyde, petroleum distillates, p-dichlorobenzene, and aerosol propellants. As of 2011, formaldehyde is listed as a known carcinogen. Exposure to these chemicals results in many adverse health effects, including causing liver damage.

If this is not enough a deterrent and motivation to switch to eco cleaning products, consider how they work. Since air fresheners are nerve-deadening chemicals, i.e. neurotoxins, they work by coating your nasal passage with an oily film to deaden your ability to smell. Alternatively they are designed to mask an offending odor with a different odor instead of eliminating them or the smelly source.

Furthermore, Women’s Voices for the Earth, in their Report Card on Household Chemicals, have reported that phthalates, the carriers for fragrance, been linked to adverse effects on male children, reduced sperm count in adult men, and increased allergic symptoms and asthma in children.

So you may ask why we have so many fragrance laden products. The chemicals in many traditional cleaning products are pungent and strong smelling. So strong in fact that they require the use of heavy fragrances just to cover up the chemical smells that we are not accustomed to smelling in our homes normally. A reason in itself for using eco cleaning products!

• Asthma accounts for more than 14 million outpatient clinic visits and nearly 2 million emergency room visits each year
• EPA’s Asthma Facts says asthma accounts for 14 million missed school days each year.

Ammonia, found in many degreasers and glass cleaners, is just horrible-smelling. Ammonia irritates the mucous membranes and skin. Ammonia is also thought to contribute to asthma. Healthy schools NEED kid safe cleaning products! Schools are safe, right? Not necessarily. As more and more precautions are implemented in every school with regards to who has contact with the kids and what can and cannot be brought onto campus, there are invisible dangers that are often ignored, including the cleaners used in the schools. The traditional commercial cleaning products used to clean most schools are decidedly NOT kid safe and the impact can be devastating.

While much attention is paid to outdoor air pollution, the National Human Activity Pattern Survey American Lung Association has found we spend the vast majority of our time (87 percent) indoors, at home and at school. Indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor air. Cleaning products that are not kid safe generate some of that pollution.

Research shows a clear link between poor indoor air quality, sick students and teachers and poor academic and occupational performance. Children miss millions of school days each year due to asthma exacerbated by poor indoor air quality in their schools. Some of this is the lack of kid safe cleaning products.

Couple this with the increasing amount of allergies and chemical sensitivities that our kids develop. This invisible problem is larger than we realize. (I still cringe when a customer told me of his daughter who would come home from school smelling like bleach!)

As if this is not enough to require the use of only kid safe cleaning products in the schools, additional health concerns arise with regard to teaching and custodial staff, especially women of child-bearing age, in using the traditional, toxic, petrochemical based janitorial cleaning supplies.

Fortunately the Healthy Schools Campaign is underway! In fact, many states have now enacted some form of a Green Clean Schools Act that requires or encourages the use of environmentally sensitive and kid safe cleaning products and maintenance supplies in schools. As a part of these programs it is paramount to understand what green janitorial supplies are available and which are best to use around children.

Using those green janitorial supplies have received an independent third party certification, such as EcoLogo, Green Seal and/or EPA’s Design for the Environment (DfE) will ensure a kid safe cleaning product is in use. • Don’t be fooled by labels – Buy only safe, non-toxic (not just green), kid safe cleaning products. Since label claims are not always true, it is safest to use only certified green cleaning products, such as those certified by Green Seal, EcoLogo and Design for the Environment (DfE).

• Read the label – Always follow product label instructions. Dilute your green cleaning supplies according to instructions. Never mix!
• Check the warning labels – Do not allow your kids to use anything with a Caution or Danger warning. (If you decide to use the product yourself, use gloves and other proper protective gear. Know, however, that options do exist so gloves should not be necessary!)
• No open containers – Don’t leave cleaning buckets containing even a small amount of liquid unattended. Toddlers can be top heavy and if they topple into a bucket, it may not tip over and they could drown. Use only the amount of kid safe home cleaning product needed for the job at hand.
• Use Microfiber cloths for green cleaning– These cloths will remove dust and dirt efficiently while using smaller amounts of both water and kid safe home cleaning products.
• Fight germs without nasty chemicals – Microwave your sponge by wetting it and zap for two minutes to kill the germs.
• Skip the biggest hazards – Avoid air fresheners, they are neurotoxins.
• Avoid antibacterial products – If your family is generally healthy, there’s no need to use potentially toxic, antibacterial products (according to the American Medical Association). Wash your hands with plain soap and hot water.

• DANGER = Extremely flammable, corrosive, or highly toxic
• WARNING or CAUTION = Moderately or slightly toxic

If you do not like what you read, consider alternatives for your baby safe home cleaning.

Baby Proofing – This is not a one-time procedure but an adopted way of life for a baby safe home.

Child-Resistant Packaging – This is an important baby safe home cleaning tip as it can save your baby’s life. Never repackage a product, however, as you will lose the valuable information on the label.

Clean from the Top Down – When house cleaning, save the floor or carpet for last and allow time for the dust to settle before vacuuming.Hepa-filter vacuum will collect more of the fine particulates.

Minimize Dust – Remove clutter which collects dust, such as old newspapers and magazines. A ‘no-shoes-indoors’ policy helps.

Keep Bedrooms Clean– With most of our time at home spent in our bedrooms, our house will be cleaner if pets are kept out of these rooms, especially if they spend time outdoors.

Exchange Indoor Air – This is important since many modern energy efficient homes are so tight there’s little new air coming in. Open your windows or run installed exhaust fans.

Use Cellulose Sponges in the kitchen – Most household sponges are made of plastic which are treated with triclosan. Cellulose sponges are available at natural foods stores.

Use Microfiber Cloths for general household cleaning – These cleaning cloths trap and remove dust (not just move it around), are extremely absorbent, and are reusable.

Paramount to any baby safe home cleaning tips includes laundry – Select your laundry soap carefully. Do not use more soap than is absolutely necessary. Stay away from dryer sheets. (The reason they work is that they coat the fabrics with toxic chemicals. If you want to minimize the static electricity, add a ball of aluminum foil to the dryer.)

Air fresheners is one of the most common products used in our home, especially with a baby in the home. Unfortunately these are formulated from a number of chemicals including xylene, a neurotoxin and possible reproductive toxin. Even worse is that air fresheners usually work by coating your nasal passages, deadening your ability to smell, or by covering up offending odors instead of getting rid of them.
