Cleaning, especially green cleaning, is full of myths and half-truths. These seem to be propagated by what occurred many years ago, namely how our mothers and grandmothers cleaned. One of the most popular and well known myths is the belief that “Newspaper is the best streak-free cleaner for widows and glass!”
The term “myth” is derived from the Greek word mythos, which simply means story. Furthermore myths are usually set in a timeless past. Well once again newspaper and window cleaning has become woven together, yet it is unfounded.
Newspaper is lighter and more susceptible to tearing during use than the common alternative of paper towels or rags, especially when wet. The truth is, the newsprint can smear on the glass and especially on the frame of mirrors and windows. Furthermore newspaper ink can leave permanent stains on your windows.
If the paper tears you might end up rubbing the glass with your skin further exasperating the smearing and staining.
Compound all of that with the digital age. Today it is even hard to find a source for newspaper since so many have relied on the more timely digital form of receiving news!
As Nadia Boulanger, a French composer, conductor, and teacher who is notable for having taught many of the leading composers and musicians of the 20th century, “Life is denied by lack of attention, whether it be cleaning windows or trying to write a masterpiece.”
“We use microfiber cloths to clean glass,” says Debra Johnson, home cleaning expert for Merry Maids, a national franchise. Even better is one of the newest forms of microfiber, namely CleansGreen® Spunlace Microfiber Cloth. This non-terry microfiber cloth is smooth, yet just as effective as any other split microfiber in that it is absorbent, yet quick drying, and can be used without chemicals for a streak free, lint free, non-abrasive, spot free result.
Because it does not have the loops of a traditional microfiber cloth, it does not streak. Both the Spunlace Microfiber Cloth and eco-friendly glass cleaner is available in the Window & Glass Cleaning Kit by CleansGreen®.
