Ammonia as a DYI Cleaner | ‘The Rest of the Story …’ Presented by CleansGreen®

January 31, 2017 By Rae Ann Dougherty

Green cleaning is as full of “old wives tales” as truths that have science behind them.  Basically we all seek green cleaning products that work for a safe and ecofriendly clean.  Unfortunately the world is full of myths that we have come to understand as truths – or half-truths.

Is Ammonia the Best Cleaner?

A common belief is that ammonia is the best oven and microwave cleaner.  In fact, ammonia is reputed to clean just about everything, including no wax floors, microwaves, grills, and ovens / oven racks with burned on food.  Unfortunately it is dangerous to us and damaging to most surfaces.

Ammonia is often peddled as a sensational natural cleaner.  Regrettably, here is a situation that natural is not always best.  It is just too dangerous.  Ammonia is known for its very pungent and irritating odor. The smell alone can cause irritation to people with breathing problems.

Eyes being to tear up, even in the 5 to 10 percent concentrations that are usually reserved for household cleaning.  Furthermore, ammonia can irritate or burn skin and mucous membranes, and is highly toxic if swallowed.  Ammonia fumes react with nitrates in the environment to form unhealthy ammonium nitrate particles, which then linger in household dust, carpets, curtains and upholstery.  In reality, ammonia is used as a floor STRIPPER, not cleaner, and can deteriorate floor surfaces rather than shine them.

Although we may not know it, many cleaners typically contain ammonia including glass, window, metal and oven cleaners, as well as wax removers.  Mixing ammonia and ammonia based cleaners with chlorine bleach (or acidic cleaners) can be deadly, since this chemical combination produces highly poisonous chloramine gas.  Chloramine gas can cause severe lung damage.  Thus it is safest to develop habits of NEVER mixing ANY cleaners.
