Eco Cleaning Products – The EcoLogo is Good

February 29, 2012 By Rae Ann Dougherty 1 Comment

It is hard to discern the good, the bad, and the ugly when you are selecting your eco cleaning products. Greenwashing is everywhere. Reviewing the consumer products on the market it have been found that the top three items that are commonly victims of greenwashing are cosmetics, children’s toys, and eco cleaning products.

certified eco logoSo what’s a consumer to do? The best is to leverage the good work done by the government agencies and neutral third parties that have established respected and long standing scientifically based standards used to certify eco cleaning products. This way you do not need to become a chemist or ecologist.

A label has the greatest level of credibility if it has been granted by a third party who doesn’t stand to gain a profit by stating that the product is “green”. Many Green Cleaning Products and Green Janitorial Supplies Carry EcoLogo Certification.

EcoLogo is the oldest eco label in North America and is also one of the most recognizable trademarks. EcoLogo was originally formed in 1988 by the Canadian Federal Government for Environment Canada (the US EPA equivalent). It has recently expanded to become a global leader in certifying the most sustainable products.

EcoLogo is a non-profit third party who works with a life cycle-based sustainability model to certify eco cleaning products as green. EcoLogo criteria for green cleaning products and green janitorial supplies are developed using a multi-parameter approach that identifies the most important environmental indicators from all stages of the product’s life cycle including:

• Raw materials used;
• Formulating process;
• Product use; and
• Disposal method(s) (recycling / reuse / reduction).

Unlike conventional cleaners, eco cleaning products are bio-based. To ensure you that they work, the certification process for the eco cleaning products requires demonstration that they work as well as, if not better than traditional petrochemical based cleaners.

• Demonstrates that the product is not toxic or harmful to humans;
• Contains less than 1 percent volatile organic compounds (VOC) at ready to use concentration
• Biodegrades readily under aerobic conditions;
• Does not contain intentionally added carcinogens, mutagens, or reproductive toxins (including endocrine disruptors)
