Product Ingredients included on the Labels and the Material Safety Data Sheets MSDS for Green Cleaning Products

June 10, 2010 By Rae Ann Dougherty 4 Comments

Using green cleaning products is very popular.  Ensuring your green janitorial supplies are non-toxic is even more important in protecting those using the cleaning products, whether you are a janitor, a homemaker, and children doing their chores or even babies and pets that may be around the cleaning chemicals and products.  Everything that is green is not necessarily safe for humans and pets.  Additionally things that are safe for people are not necessarily green and safe for the environment.  Unfortunately due to prevalent greenwashing, it is hard to know if a cleaning product or janitorial chemical is green and/or safe.  Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) can help you to learn the ingredients and the hazards of your cleaning products and your janitorial supplies.

MSDS for Green Cleaning Products that are Safe AND GreenFor example, despite the fact that Simple Green advertises that the product is safe and non-toxic, the Simple Green All Purpose MSDS reveals that it contains 2-Butoxy Ethanol.  Not only is this chemical a respiratory, eye, nose and throat irritant, it is also know to be a cancer and reproductive hazard and breaks down red blood cells.  Although it may be green, it is not safe for custodians seeking green janitorial supplies or mothers seeking safe products for themselves, their children and babies.

All chemical manufacturers are required by law to describe the ingredients and the hazards of chemical products they supply on an MSDS – clearly and completely.  The MSDS is required by law to be accurate, similar to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) requirement for your tax returns.  Since there is no room for greenwashing, these documents serve as an information resource for you.

As a consumer, you can find or request the MSDS for products you buy.  Although intended for industrial and professional users, even consumer products have an MSDS.

Green Cleaning Products is proud to offer products that are safe for the environment AND are safe for you, your pets, and even your baby.  We provide easy access to our Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).  You will find all of these products are safe AND green.  In fact these products have been certified by the US Environmental Protection Agency under their Design for the Environment (DfE) program.
