Why Green Cleaning Products are Important for Your Business

August 9, 2010 By Rae Ann Dougherty Leave a Comment

We are often asked by clients, why are green cleaning products important for your business? If you are designing the Green Action Plan for your company, it is important to understand the thinking of your customer base.  For instance if you decide to use green janitorial chemicals and green janitorial supplies and let others know about it, will the consumer care?  The short answer is yes.

Green Cleaning Products Important for BusinessThe most basic definition of Green is relatively simple.  Basically it is all about minimizing the potential negative environmental impacts of your operations and using all of your resources as efficiently as possible.  As you continually seek to eliminate all types of waste, especially plastic waste, protect the environment, and increase operational efficiency to become more sustainable, the end result is a reduction in total costs.  So if you can find a product line that achieves all of these objectives in the selection of your green janitorial supplies and chemicals why would you not do so?  Additionally if you found that the eco friendly consumer be likely to to purchase green janitorial cleaning supplies themselves, that is even better!

Do Consumers Care That Your Business Is Green?

Through a rigorous data collection process a national marketing survey by Cone LLC indicates that consumers are mindful of green business options.  The results showed that individual consumers are personally focusing pro environmental actions in three areas:

  • Conserving Energy (93%)
  • Conserving Water (86%)
  • Recycling (89%)

As for business, American consumers expects several things, some of them are:

  • Reduce pollution throughout operations (71%)
  • Design products/packaging to be more environmentally friendly (69%)
  • Communicate environmental efforts to employees and consumers, so they can support those efforts (69%)

Furthermore among the Americans who report buying eco friendly products, the products they purchase tend to include:

  • Products with recycled content (62%)
  • Energy efficient home improvements (56%)
  • Cleaning supplies (48%)

These statistics provides the framework to develop the green initiatives for the business.  For instance the scenario of using green janitorial supplies and chemicals in the operations and then communicating this to your customers is warranted.

Measuring Green Cleaning Products Business Goals

So how do you quantify a return-on-investment for your efforts?  Start with a clear vision of what Green means for your business and then set specific and measurable goals that maximize value.  Use this to provide focus and motivation for your business team during the implementation process.  Measure first – know what is material to your business; is it energy use, raw materials, cost of supplies?  The adage “what you measure is what you get” is 100 percent true because of the focus that results from gathering the metrics.

On your journey to Go Green there are many opportunities to make changes that are not extremely costly, but can make a big difference in increasing energy efficiency or reducing waste.  There are many actions you can take such as using super concentrate green janitorial chemicals that are also nontoxic.
